Lauren Lee Smith is joining CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as a series regular, the network announced yesterday.
Looking to fill the void left by the departures of Jorja Fox and recently arrested Gary Dourdan, both of whom decided not to re-sign with CSI after failing to work out new contracts. With Smith in place, producers still must fill the role of Ray Santoro, billed as a “handsome, smart and athletic” CSI who takes on the graveyard shift at the crime lab.
The 27-year-old Smith will play Bryce Adams, a smart, flirtatious and witty nonconformist who is hired as a CSI on the night-shift team led by Grissom (William Petersen).
Canadian-born Smith, who co-starred on CBS’ pilot “Can Openers” this past development season, film credits include last month’s thriller Pathology, as well Art School Confidential and alongside Casey Affleck and Zach Braff in The Last Kiss. She teams up with Ashley Judd and Goran Visnjic in the drama Helen, due out in October, and will appear in next year’s horror anthology Trick or Treat.

Matthew McConaughey spills the dirt on “the ghosts of girlfriends past” in his blog.
Hear about his escapades with Penelope Cruz and Ashley Judd. But take it with a grain of salt — they’re part of his role for the movie, Ghosts of Girlfriend Past.

Racecar driver Dario Franchitti (also known as the husband of Ashley Judd) won the 91st edition of the Indy 500 on Sunday, in a rain-soaked race that had his celeb spouse cheering him on.
“The ups and downs throughout the day – what can I say?” Franchitti said, according to the Indianapolis Star. “I’m in shock right now – it’s been a rollercoaster month, and it was a rollercoaster day.”
For Franchitti, 34, Judd’s husband of nearly six years, the Indy win was one of his biggest ever, and it was the second win for his team in nearly three years. The race, cut short by the rain, was halted after 166 laps – or 415 of the race’s 500 miles. The Scottish-born Franchitti jumped into the lead after the two drivers ahead of him were forced to make a pit stop.
“It was going to come down to a dogfight, and there’s a lot of strong cars,” he said, the Associated Press reports. “Whatever happened, if it came down to that dogfight, it was going to be hard, so I was hoping for the rain.”
As Franchitti made a victory lap of the 2.5-mile oval in the heavy rain, Judd, soaking wet in a summer dress, climbed the pit wall and dashed toward the victory celebration.
“I can hardly believe it,” Franchitti added of his win. “Who would have thought it?”
